IRF’s Traffic Management and ITS Award 2021

during the awarding session

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has won the Traffic Management and Intelligent Transportation Systems Award, part of the Global Road Achievement Award of the International Road Federation (IRF) for Dubai’s Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Centre. The award honours the innovative road projects and model staff who attach priority to the roads industry in the objectives of social and economic development around the world. The awards distribution ceremony took place as part of the events of the 18th IRF World Meeting and Exhibition at the Dubai World Trade Centre 7-9 November 2021.

During the ceremony, RTA as well as other participating international organisations were honoured in 12 categories highlighted by: Asset Preservation & Maintenance Management, Construction Methodology, Design, Technology, Equipment & Manufacturing, Urban Planning & Mobility, Research and other local and global projects nominated. The award was received by Salahaldeen Almarzooqi, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems, RTA,  from His Excellency Abdullah Al-Mogbel - IRF Global Chairman.

This felicitation confirms the efforts of RTA to employ the latest technologies and smart software in facilitating mobility around Dubai, increasing the ITS coverage of main roads in the emirate, and improving the monitoring and response time to accidents and congestions in the emirate. Thus, it contributes to realising RTA’s vision to become The World Leader in Seamless & Sustainable Mobility.

The IRF congratulated RTA on this achievement and pointed out that RTA had been instrumental in integrating transportation means and developing the infrastructure of road and bridge projects. He noted that introducing the ITS in traffic management would considerably increase transportation safety.

The assessment criteria of the Best Project the Traffic Management and ITS Award were based on several aspects such as the advanced technologies used (smart systems, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and the Internet of Things). The criteria also covered the current and future benefits, the unique features of the systems used, the extent of contribution to reducing congestion, improvement of traffic safety, and the enhancement of eco-friendliness.

The Dubai ITS Centre at Al Barsha is a highly sophisticated traffic control centre in terms of applying smart technologies. It is the backbone of the traffic safety strategy and the smart traffic systems expansion plan. The ITS supports the current and future means of transportation and matches the fast urbanisation of Dubai as well as the hosting of major exhibitions, specifically Expo 2020 which rolls on until the end of March 2022.

The IRF Global Road Achievement Award is a unique contest to honour innovative road projects and exemplary personnel who prioritise the road industry in the context of socio-economic development across the world. Established in 2000, the Awards have recognized more than 120 programmes, projects and products around the world. The awards serve as a reminder to a large audience that mobility, which everyone takes for granted, would not be possible to operate in a country without talent and commitment in our industry, development accelerator and new ideas showcasing innovative technologies and solutions in this field.
