Roads Leading to Expo 2020

Project Description

• The execution of two bridged intersections on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, securing entry and exit to and from the Expo site:
  • The first intersection (Expo Interchange) included the construction of two bridges with a capacity of six lanes serving traffic coming from Dubai, Sharjah and other Emirates; two bridges with a capacity of two lanes serving traffic coming from Abu Dhabi towards the exhibition; and a bridge with a capacity of two lanes serving the movement of vehicles leaving the exhibition to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed towards Abu Dhabi.
  • The second interchange (Al Maktoum Air- port intersection) included the construction of a single bridge with the capacity of three lanes serving traffic coming from Dubai, Sharjah and the other Emirates towards the exhibition site, and another bridge with the capacity of two lanes serving the movement of vehicles leaving the exhibition towards Abu Dhabi.
• The execution of 16 kilometres of road works.
• The conversion of the previously existing roundabout at the intersection of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Expo Road to a bridge intersection providing free traffic in every direction.
• The construction of two bridges with a capacity of six lanes in each direction and the provision of detour movements and free connections, ensuring the smooth flow of traffic.
• The execution of 27 kilometres of road works on Expo Road, expanding the road from four to six lanes in each direction.
• The establishment of service roads in both directions, including the implementation of four bridges to enable traffic movement to and from Expo Road towards the exhibition site.

Project Benefits

• Serving traffic coming from Dubai, Sharjah and other emirates and allowing them to enter the car parks at the Expo 2020 site.
• A vehicle exit service from the exhibition site to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street towards Abu Dhabi.
• Increasing the capacity of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road intersection with Expo Road from 8,000 vehicles per hour to 60,000 vehicles per hour.
• Reducing the journey time on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road from the dock intersection to the entrance to Al Maktoum Airport from 35 minutes to six minutes.
• Providing a direct exit from the Expo 2020 site to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, heading north towards Dubai.
