The Legal Forum explores role of Artificial Intelligence in transportation

The Legal Affairs Department at the Executive Affairs Sector of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) organised a legal forum titled “Legal Aspects of Artificial Intelligence in Transportation.” The forum addressed various dimensions of artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications in transportation sector.
This event marks the 5th legal forum organised by the Legal Affairs Department, tackling emerging legal challenges and issues associated with smart transportation technologies.
In his opening address, Shehab Hamad Bu Shehab, Executive Director of Legal Affairs, welcomed attendees and participants, emphasizing the -pivotal role of AI technology in transportation sector. He highlighted the forum served as a platform to anticipate legislative developments in the field, with discussions focusing on addressing current challenges and identifying pathways to enhance legislative frameworks.
Bu Shehab highlighted the unwavering support of the UAE’s leadership, which has entrusted the RTA with the key role of leading the legislative process. This involves drafting and revising laws to ensure they remain flexible, adaptable to current realities, and aligned with future advancements. He noted that the overarching aim is to establish a comprehensive legislative framework that supports AI integration while providing robust legal cover.
Legislative Framework of Autonomous Vehicles
The forum highlighted the importance of the regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles, which began with the legislation of the trial run in the publishing of Law No. (9) of 2023 regulating the operation of autonomous vehicles in the Emirate of Dubai. This law positioned Dubai as a pioneering leader in setting regulatory frameworks that govern the operation of autonomous vehicles at a global level.
Participants also discussed Dubai's efforts to establish itself as a global hub for adopting innovative solutions and applications. They emphasised the importance of ensuring comprehensive safety measures for autonomous vehicle use, aligning with the Dubai Smart Self-Driving Strategy. Discussions also addressed the importance of meeting public safety requirements for individuals and property as smart transportation systems advance into operational phases.
The forum explored the significant of flexible legislation to keep pace with advancements in AI and the legal challenges arising from its integration into smart transportation systems. It emphasis the risks associated with AI, the civil and criminal liabilities resulting from harm to individuals and property, and strategies to address these challenges. Furthermore, the forum examined the legal implications of smart transportation on the development and sustainability of these systems.
The participants recommended the importance of monitoring the implementation to ensure that drivers and vehicles comply with the legal requirements for -operating autonomous transportation. They also underscore the need to regulate operational trials for smart transportation modes, including aerial taxis and marine transport.
